Leme Leaning on Bench

A jangada's rudder leaning against the steering bench.

A jangada’s rudder, leaning against the back of the steering bench. This is where it is stored while sailing out through the breakers. It is turned on it’s side here. When hung, the red area of the blade is underwater and the white area above. The tiller head slips over the narrow end on the right. You can just see the steel rod at the bottom of the rudder which holds it to the stern post.
